  1. In olden days people would imagine it was unlucky to meet a red haired woman or anyone with red hair first in the morning. It was counted lucky to meet a dark haired woman first in the morning, on the other hand. Again if a person were going on business if they saw one magpie it was counted very unlucky and if they saw two it was counted that they would have the best of luck for that day. Likewise if you were unfortunate enough to break a mirror misfortune was yours for seven years. It was also counted unlucky to beat anything with an alder branch, and it was also said that you would not grow any bigger. It was said that you would not grow any bigger if you went into a house with anything on your shoulder or if you put up an umbrella indoors.
