When The Lapwing grey Plover commonly called "the Philibeen" is a sign of cold, hard weather. (when seen in this district.)
Transcribed by a member of our volunteer transcription project.
  2. There are many sorts of birds in this district - the swallow, the cuckoo, the wood-quest, the robin, these are some of them. The swallow builds her nest in a hay-shed or stable with mud and feathers.
They say if you killed a swallow your cows would milk blood. The swallow flies away in the first of the winter.
The cuckoo comes in the first of the summer. She lays one egg in another bird's nest usually the hedge-sparrows. When the young cuckoo comes out it kills the young sparrows. When the young cuckoo is able to fly it flies away to some other country.
The wood-quest is a very common bird
She builds her nest in the whitethorn with leaves and sticks. This bird lays two eggs every year.
