    to be carried as far as Willie Kiernan's (next house in the lane - this lane was rather narrow and it was impossible for the heirse to go as far as Ann's house) The coffin was placed in the heirse, but the horses refused to go, although they were beaten with whip and plant. Finally, the coffin had to be taken out of the hearse and carried by men to the road. The coffin was again put into the hearse and the horses moved off.
