engaged the services of a tramp piper named Clinton, and during the time he remained, a period of about two year, Smyth's trade flourished.
There was a large room in Smyth's public house called the "drinking room" and when the customers were gathered there, drinking "punch" (there was no porter in those days), Clinton supplied music, receiving for his services an occasional glass of punch together with a copper collection nightly.
Clinton composed a song about Moyne of which the following are a few lines.
They danced and the sang till daybreak
While Clinton played up merry time
The music was made in Parnassus

May they all the bloom like the laurel
With nothing to torture their minds
The grace of God ever may shine
On the jolly gay topes of Moyne
