- (continued from previous page)Carrastrawley. One of the teachers names was Mulhearnen. The teachers lodged in different scholar's houses every night. The pupils paid the teachers by bringing him 2d every Monday morning. There was no Irish or there were no subjects thaught through Irish. The scholars learned from a English book called the "Ring of the Daisy". They wrote on slates with slate pencils and they wrote on paper with feather quills or pens. The pupils had stones for seats and their knees for desks. They had no blackboards. The teachers stayed 2 months in each district.
- There was no hedge school in this district. There was a hedge school in Killcormick, Ballymahon. It was in the barn of my great Grandfather James Donlon. Jack Lyons was the name of the teacher. He was a stranger. He was paid by the scholars each paying(continues on next page)
