  1. A Drowning
    Doctor Lough who lived in Derrydarry Newtowncashel, was on holidays and Michael Scally his workman went in a boat up the Shannon to Athlone to meet him. It was very stormy and they were advised not to go, but they ventured and put up a sail. They were out in the middle of the Shannon and their boat turned up and they were drowned. Their bodies were not got for six weeks.
    A Houseburning
    A man named Mr. Scully lived in a public house in Newtowncashel. It is not known what was the cause of its burning, but it did terrible destruction. The people of the house were almost burned to death only for a neighbour awoke them. This happened about fifty years ago.
    Plague's or Epidemics.
    The flu started about 19 years ago.
