    There was a very strong man who lived in Legan and his name was Hempenstall. He had a nickname and it was "the walking gallows", he was called this because he hung men by catching them by the neck's and throwing them across his shoulder and holding them there until they died.
    There were three great runners in this district and they were Mrs McEoin of Doon Abbey Shrule who ran down a hare in Askeagh bog. Denny Eveirs of Pallas who won a cup in Ballymahon for winning the milk race. Johnny Duffy
