  1. Thatching
Long ago, everybody about here had thatched roofs on their houses. These roofs were not made of straw as they are now-a-days but of rushes.
There were certain men in the district for thatching the houses.
First the rushes were mowed with a hook, and left for a few days to wither.
Then the rushes had to be pulled with the hand and made into little bundles and handed to the thatcher who would be standing on a ladder.
He used to make the bundles into stopples, and put them one by one with a stopple-fork into the roof, beginning at the eave and ending at the riggin.
He then combed the thatch with a little hand-rake.
When he was finished he put mortar on the riggin to keep the thatch from being blown away with the wind, and he cut the hanging rushes with a knife to make the house tidy-looking.
