  1. There used to be a number of old houses in our district long ago.
They used to have thatched roofs. The walls were made of blue clay The people used to thatch the houses.
There used to be a bed in the kitchen called the settle-bed. There was a big wide chimney made of mortar and wattles.
Sometimes there was no chimney and the fire was in the middle of the floor, and a hole in the roof to let out the smoke.
Some houses had no glass windows, but there was a piece of netting wire in front of the windows The old floors were made of clay Half doors were very common, long ago in our districts and there are some now.
