- (continued from previous page)This hill was cut out at the time of the famine to give work to the poor, and to make the road level. The day's hire was one pound of Indian meal.
During the famine years the people round Kells were not as badly off as the people in other districts. They had plenty of yellow meal. But Cholera broke out after the famine and many died in Dulane.
- Long ago the houses of the poor were merely (mood) mud hovels. The walls were built of yellow clay, and the roof was thatched with rushes.(continues on next page)
