  1. A great many years ago, there lived a family of the farming class in Ballytrehy. They had only one daughter who was very handsome. One day she was taken ill, and was almost on the point of death, however she recovered, but was now very different [to] from the fine girl she was before she got sick. She became very peevish, wouldn't eat her food at the table, but used to steal cold potatoes and hide them inside her cloak. One day her father was gone to the fair of Cahir, and herself and her mother went to the river bittling the clothes, as that was the old method of washing. When they came near the river the mother noticed the girl taking the cold potatoes out of her cloak and eating them slyly. The mother looked at her and said "You are not my daughter, she never had those dirty habits. When the father returned from the fair the mother told him what had happened. There lived at that time in County Waterford a druid, so the man made up his mind at once to go and see him. The druid told him that she
