O'Brien is the most common family name. Five houses are slated and five are thatched. None of the old people know Irish . The land is low-lying and poor. It is subject to floods. It is wooded around Hilton.

- The townland of Modeshill is divided into two parts, Modeshill-Sankey and Modeshill-Ayre.
This is how Modeshill-Sankey got its name: The landlord's name was Sankey and he was ruler of North and South Modeshill, that is why it is called Modeshill-Sankey. Phelan is the most common name. The are fifteen families in the townland and sixty-six people. Most of the land is good and fertile, but a part of it through which the King's River flows is poor owing to floods. - Bailitheoir
