    miles to the nearest town to make their purchases. At that time there was generally one of these little shops near a Chapel where they would do good trade on Sundays after Mass. That is still kept up but the shopkeepers are doing better business now.
    Money was not always given for the goods. Labour was often given in exchange for the goods. A woman would often come to the shop and spend a day washing clothes or scrubbing floors and get paid for the day by goods. People would often get goods on tick too. A person would come along daily for his goods and pay for them weekly or monthly. In former times the markets were usually held in cities and townsbut now they are held in villages, towns and cities.

  2. The houses long ago were of a very poor type. The walls were about six or eight feet high with a very low thatched roof. The walls were made of mud with the hair of animals mixed through it to keep it together. It had to be well mixed for fear it would fall assunder when it dried. The thatch was made from wheaten straw adn ofter from the reed that grew near the sea. The houses of the poorer people consisted of one room and a kitchen. There was a bed in kitchen which was called a settle-bed. This was a seat by day and a bed by night. The fireplace was usually at the gable-wall. Sometimes it was by the side walls and
