  1. There are two old houses in my town land. One belonged to Shaughnessys and the other to Guinanes. Shaughnessys house had a thatched roof and one of the windows had canvass instead of glass. The floor was made of clay. They used to get the reed for thatching in Mellon.
Guinanes house was made of clay and stones; the floor too was made of clay. There were very small glass windows in it.
Some people had a bed in the kitchen called a 'canopy' bed. It was made of timber and covered over with canvas. Other people had timber beds called 'press' beds. They could fold them up during the day to look like a press. There were other timber beds called 'settle' beds that were folded during the day to make a seat.
Half doors are common yet in this district.
Turf and timber are commonly used where there are hearths, and coal in houses with a range.
Home made candles were used to give light. They were made from the fat of cows and sheep and a rush was inserted for a wick.
