  1. A mother stood in her cottage door in Ireland far away.
    Gazing on her loving son going to America,
    He was her pride, her hope, and joy and from her he must go,
    And as she pressed him to her breast those words she whispered low:
    Won't you think of me a cushla when in a foreign land?
    Won't your thoughts wander back again to your own dear native land?
    Where you have spent you youthful days in the valleys fresh and green
    In the cottage by the river, in the vales of New Direen.
    II
    He raised his manly form as the tears stood in his eye,
    Saying "mother I won't forget you dear, until the day I die,
    Whatever will befall me, your image I'll keep green,
    And my thoughts will wander round the vales of New Direen

    A token then she gave to him to wear it on his breast,
