Hiring Song
“Now the Winter is all over and the Spring is coming on.”
The following "Hiring" song was composed by the "Bird" Mick Aherne. He is a young man about 30 years old who lives in Knockfinisk near Carrickerry. He is noted for ready composition of Ballads when occasion arises. His brother Paddy is a celebrated local violinist and attends every (marra) marriage feast and "social" for miles around. Now the Winter is all over and the Spring is coming on.
When all the girls around must go and leave their mam,
They are packing up their bundles with a fortnight or a week.
Going to the market employment for to seek.IIThe morning they are leaving they bid their mam Good bye.
Then put on their shawls and next commence to cry,
Saying "why didn't you get me married" or let me cross the sea.
I'm tired of my life and I'm this way every year.IIIBut when they reach the market they're wandering up and down,
Watching the old farmer as he drives unto town.
And thinking of the evening not knowing where to roam,
And all the golly Winter and boys they left at home.(continues on next page)- Collector
