- Calf baskets are put on young calves, to prevent them eating anything harmful. There baskets are still made locally. Sally rods are cut and left for three or four days to season as they bend better then, and won't break. Get five or six straight sally rods about 14 inches long. Lay the rods diagonally. Bind in the middle and interweave with lighter sally rods. After one or two sally rods are interwoven in the centre, continue binding at the same time drawing in the rods until the basket is the required size.
