  1. Long ago the poor people could not buy candles. In some districts candles could not be got.
When the people went to the bog they got a supply of bogdale from which the candles were made. They got the bogdale under the surface. Some of the banks were five feet in depth so that they were able to get enough of the dale.
The dale was left dry in the sun. Then it was left over the fire so that it was well "seasoned". Then it was cut into small pieces called "splinters". They are the shape of a candle but much lighter. One of these would last for a night.
