reward of £5 to the family who used the new burial ground first.
Interest was aroused but nothing done as yet. One poor Protestant whose mother was dying got an idea but the woman recovered. He removed her secretly to the house of a married daughter in Bantry. When she [was] safely away the rumour went out that [she] was dead.
Her coffin arrived and in due course was removed to the new cemetry. The parson was delighted and when the ceremony was over publicly presented the distressed son with the sum of five pounds complementing him on his sense of duty.
At the time he was not aware that the coffin contained a pig which was removed again when night came. Hence the name Teampall na Muice.
