  1. About the year 1100 the monks lived in Inistioge in the old Castle in the Churchyard. One day when they were in a field, on the bank of the Nore called the Church Meadow just at the village, they saw a mermaid coming toward them. They watched it for a while go about in the water, then they caught it. When they had it on the bank they sent for the other monks and when they came they killed it. Then they brought it up to the Castle where they lived and one of the monks cut it out on a stone and they kept it in the Castle. One day they put it in the wall in the Chapelyard. It is now to be seen int the Chapelyard at Inistioge.
