   was taken to Mrs. Newport's house (on a stretcher bed) a distance of four hundred yards. They burned the windows and doors and some of the furniture. They threw petrol on a little alter while over it hung a picture of the Blessed Virgin. The blaze went up all round it without burning it. It is there to the present day unharmed.

   Brandon Hill is on fire to night. It is the practice of the people who own it to burn the furze off it every year that the grass may grow for the sheep. The people of the district set great value on the turf which was plenty in the hill. Unfortunately as the furze were being burned in 1920 the turf took fire. It smouldered for two
