  1. Jack Taaffe was a noted duelist and was never once defeated. On one occasion he was challenged to fight. The morning in question his opponent while waiting began to test his shot by cutting an inch off a rod with every shot. Taaffe's servant was watching and on seeing the true shot of the opponent went into his master to relate what he had seen. Instead of encouraging him he told him it was useless fighting such a true marksman. All Taaffe said was "A rod has no pistol". Taaffe shot his opponent, then dismissed his servant.
    On another occassion Taaffe was in Dublin. It being Friday he ordered fish as he was a good Catholic. In the same room were Protestants eating a delicious meal of fried meat. One Protestant, being jealous of the Catholic threw a spoonful of gravy on Taaffe's plate. Not showing any signs of emotion he ordered another fish and again the same thing occurred.
