  1. Matchmaking is still carried on, to a great extent in many parts of Ireland, and in our district it has not died out completely. I have heard how they do it.
    When a man wanted to have his daughter married to a certain young man of good means, and in every way suitable, he just had a word with the matchmaker of the district after night fall. This match-maker provided with a bottle of whiskey in his pocket, and his shillelagh in his hand, went to the young man's house.
