    When I was a school boy of fifteen or more...

    When I was a school boy of fiftteen or more.
    I thought to myself I had learning galore.
    I made up my mind to retire from school
    To get rid of the teacher his rod and his rule
    At home on the farm I worked for some time,
    I whitened the house after bringing the lime,
    My parents advised me hard labour to drop
    And become an apprentice in a drapery shop

    I knew very well their intentions were good
    They wanted to take me
