When Our Lord was crucified the robin redbreast came to him and said "I will free you Jesus" and he strove to pull out the nails with his beak and he made his beak crooked and his breast was red with the blood of Our Lord and ever since that the robin's breast is red and his beak is crooked.
The cuckoo never makes a nest of her own, she puts her eggs into other birds nests and when they grow up the little birds follow the cuckoo. The birds know what the other birds say to them and understand each others speech.
