- (continued from previous page)for a week. The horses were called Vanboy and Vanity. When the race was finished the first evening a dispute arose between the owners and backers of the respective horses. As it was then late it was decided to run the race again next evening. The news of the event spread far and wide and huge crowds flocked to see the race.
Again a dispute arose regarding the winner, free fight were indulged in and the police were forced to disperse the crowds. The five village public houses were then crowded and it was with great difficulty that the houses were closed even long after closing time.
Noisy scenes took place in the streets to an early four in the morning. This continued daily for a week and had to stop then as neither the owners nor their backers had any more money to spend. A man from Kilworth named Patrick W[?] owned Vanity and a man named Martin(continues on next page)
