    The Hayes family, who lived in the townland of Ballinahaglish, had a son named Michael.

    Meantime he was hiding in the vault in Ballinahaglish cemetery. At twilight one evening he came to my great grand father's house. He asked for a sheaf of straw, and the old man asked him what he wanted it for. Michael told him the story of the landlord, and of his hiding place.
    The old man had pity for him and offered him refuge in his house. This offer Michael gladly accepted. Indeed he would have spent the remaining years of his life there, but someone gave information again to the police. It happened that my great grandfather was in Mr. Barret's forge in Ballina one day, and the police approached him. They told him that he had this stranger concealed in his house, which was the truth, but he denied it.
