- Potatoes are grown in every farm in my district. We generally sow about an acre and a half of them. My father and the working men prepare the land. The potatoes are sown in drills and sometimes in ridges. The ground is ploughed into drills at first. Then the drills are filled with artificial manure and farmyard manure. The potatoes are sprouted into boxes before setting them into drills. They are set in drills then about a foot apart. The drills are then closed with a plough, and about three or four weeks after that they are earthed. About the month of June they are sprayed with bluestone and washing soda and water to prevent a disease called blight. They are then sprayed three times during the Summer.
In Autumn they are ploughed with a trench plough, and picked into bags. Some people let them in the field in pits.
Wooden ploughs were used formerly, but are not in use now. Spades are not made here but are all bought in the shops.- Collector
