- In days of old the only means of livelihood that people had was fishing. It is said that before any sea accident happens that every fisherman gets a warning. One fine morning in the month of June all the fishing boats left Portaleen very early. As they turned round at "Portalong" there on the rocks saw a beautiful Mermaid. Sometimes she would make signs with her hands to the boats for them to turn back but often in vain. The boats never turned and then she started to cry and clap her hands and in one second she disappeared into her home in the ocean and great crys were heard as she did so. When the boats were out very far a great storm arose and when they would be almost in at the pier a gale of wind would come and drift them out again. Many lives were lost although many bodies never were discovered.Collected by Cassie Kelly Ballysala Coolkenny PO
