  1. There are seven altars in Muff at which in the penal days the priests said Mass. There are three in Manus Harkin's ground and three in Patrick Sheil's ground and one called Gillin's rock which is in Dan McGonagle's ground.
    Some of them are very interesting. In one there is a picture of a Chalice and a cross at each side. At another there are a lot of flowers growing around it and three stone steps up to it. In another there is a picture of a hand in the stone, and another which is very nice looking and the old people say there is a golden chalice and a pure altar stone in it. There are three holes in another which are known to be for flower vases. Some say it is a mystery how the chalice was put into the rock.
