    in her home in Cruttenclough, five or six hundred yards distant from the main Leighlin Road, along which the Insurgents troops were advancing. While in the house Father John heard the sound of gunfire from the direction of Castlecomer. "I must be going" he said as he departed "I hear Roaring Bess at work in Comer. "Roaring Bess" was the name given to a big gun which the English had in Castlecomer. The house is still occupied by the Dooley family.
