  1. In the year 1847-48 the famine starte in Ireland and it was called the black year because the people had nothing to eat but meal and turnips. The meal was sold in Athlone at the old Barrick's by well off people at 4d a lb. The same year John Muldoon's father in Cappa worked with Bertie Gaynor in the field beside Muldoon's and he worked for 4d a day and when their days work was over they would go down to Baylin for a lb of meat at 4d. At Berries where there is a old house on the top of the hill people lived there name Higgin's and they sold meal

  2. I often heard my mother tell of the "bad time" - this account is the experience of a grand aunt of my own - times after the famine. It happened that two or three young girls were going to mid-night mass at Xmas time, of course in the Castledaly, Moate district.
