  1. Long ago during the penal days children were forbidden to go to Catholic schools. Although the people were very fond of learning they would not allow their children to go to protestant schools. The Irish had such a love for learning that they appointed a learned man to teach the children of the parish. Each child gave the teacher a few coppers every week to teach them.
