Most marriages were at Shrove. It was lucky to get married on a Tuesday, Thursday, or Saturday. It was not lucky to get married in May or August. If the man looked into a looking glass the morning of his marriage it wold mean bad luck. It was the same people who used make all the matches. When a matchmaker was going to a house to make a match he would always have whiskey but he used get it from the other people who sent him to make the match. Sometimes he used not be sent at all, but used make the matches himself. Twas all matches in those days. Sometimes farmers used to make matches for their servant boys or servant girls.
