  1. In the townland of Gurteen (little field) a thatched church formerly stood. It was burned down (by accident) early in the 19th century. A farm there is still known as the "Chapel Farm.
The church which preceded this is believed by at least one authority to have stood in the Land now occupied by the People's Park (Town Park) where there were two holy wells - one being called "Lady's Well" and the other, "The Sore Eye well" because of its reputed curative properties.
