  2. During the famine years the people of this locality suffered severely. It is stated that people used to go over working to Lether road from Gurteenakilla and they used to die over with hunger. They used to pick the "eyes" out of the potatoes with a quill and eat the rest of it raw. The people around here used to get free meal and make gruel of it. A man in Goleen used to give out free bowls of soup for charity. The same man had a workman. The workman used to
