    Often there was no bag only the bundle of straw. This was called a "shake-down".
    Lights were never lit in summer. The people went to bed about eight o clock and were up at daybreak. The light was weak as it was only a rush candle. At one time they used fish-oil as oil to give light but that oil was scarce. The candles were made in the homes.
