"One side of the road is as good as the other." That meant that the side in which the bridge was, was as good as the other side where the house was, and the gold was put on the side where the bridge was. The woman also read from the book. "As deep as the waters that shine on the river deeper is the gold that is under the earth." That means the gold was under the bridge, and not in the rock
