- There are many districts in this country in which the ruins of old schools can be seen There are some of them in this district. A few of them were built by a man named Synge and were called "soup schools". These were used to entice the poor people to commit sin.
One of these is situated on a hill at a place called Carhue. It is a stone building with a slated roof which has nearly all fallen. It was built about a hundred years ago. It is two storeys high. Instead of stairs the top storey was entered by means of a big mound of earth at the back. By this means no stairs had to be climbed by the children. Synge himself taught there. It could contain about two hundred pupils. There are two chimneys in it still and four fireplaces, two on the first(continues on next page)
