It is always said when giving away new milk that a drop of water should be put in it to save butter and cows.About ten miles from Nenagh a woman had a charm for taking away the milk from the farmers around. She used to take the "spansels" off the cows if they were not watched, while they were being milked and these she took home with her to her cabin in the mountains. There, people said she used hang them up on the rafters, and setting a charm over them milked them, when they became as productive as the best cows. It is said she had no cow herself and yet she brought large quantities of butter for sale to the neighbouring markets while many large farmers from the same district whose "spansels" had been tampered with, bewailed their milk and butter supply.
