“The most important fort around this district is a large one situated in the centre of Castlerahan.”
The most important fort around this district is a large one situated in the centre of Castlerahan. It is called the moat. It is circular in shape and is surrounded by a group of hawthorn bushes.
There is an opening in the centre concealed by a large flat stone and there is a story told about men who had been digging with iron bars on the top of the moat and one of the bars fell through the opening and could be heard rattling far into the earth. When the men tried to move the stone they found it impossible to move it more than three inches from the side.
The bar has never been located.
There was a castle built on top of the moat during the times of the Danish raids in Ireland and the Danes are said to have attacked the castle and reduced it to ruins. The owner who was named Rahan was absent when the raid was made and so he escaped. Castlerahan gets its name from this castle and its owner.
Many years ago the owner of the moat dug clay from it to use as top-dress on part of a field where he was about to grow oats.
