- There is a story told about a treasure being hidden in a field in Castlerahan. This is a very small field, it is, in fact two hills beside each other and in the hollow between the two the treasure is said to be hidden. Besides gold there is said to be a bag of valuable silver-ware and a blood hound is supposed to guard this treasure day and night.
The story has come down through the centuries and is related thus:-
Long, long ago there was a little cabin situated on top of one of the little hills which is flat on the summit but the owner of this house was really a very rich man who was living in make believe poverty so as not to excite the suspicion of a gang of money-hunters who were at that time at large in the country.
This man lived alone except for the company of a blood hound which he kept to guard his treasure. One day he heard rumours that he was being tracked by the gang of criminals so he hastily dug a hole and put the treasure into it and he himself rushed across some fields and remained in hiding for a few days until his safety was assured and afterwards, the story, says, he sailed to France and nothing was ever heard of his returning, the blood hound did(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
