  1. Formerly fords were crossed by steps until bridges were built. There is a ford in the Lisgannon river about a mile from my home called "Ballybrockley" which means "The ford mouth of the trout".
There is a number of small and big stones across the ford because this was the only means of crossing the river in former times until the bridge was built. A little farther down, on the same river there is another ford.
It is known as "the black steps". It is called this because the stones are all black in colour. It forms a path-way from Cornabest to Corravoggy. It is very seldom used now unless in the summer-time.
A little bit up the river from this ford there is a very deep spot in the river called "Patrick's Hole" because there was a man called Patrick drowned in it long ago.
