  1. Most of the industries of ancient Ireland are now discontinued. Basket - making was the common trade in the district where I live.
    The baskets were made with willow - rods. First, the rods were left standing in bunshes for a while to dry. Then the skins were peeled off the rods and they were twisted into whatever shape was needed. If white baskets were needed the rods would have to be boilt in a large pot of water and then the skins would fall off and the rods would be as white as snow. The next fair day a cart - load would be brought into the nearest town and sold. Very often a large sum of money was made from a load of baskets. A man called Mr. Mills living in Ashfield still makes baskets.
    Rush - candles were the only light the old people had for a long time. They were called
