    The houses long ago were different to the houses of to-day. There were no two storey houses about the country. The fires were generally built in the gable of the house.
    Before the fan bellows were in use the people used a hand-bellows which was very handy. The people had turf fires and every man had his share of turf in bog where they got the turf.
    Many people burned fires out-side which they called ash-fires. They would build a heap of sods and set fire to them, and it would take a whole day for them to burn, and when they would be burned, the men would put the ashes on the crops to keep the frost from destroying them.
    The old houses were thatched
