- The last local landlord was named Humphreys. He was not of noble blood. He was a shop-assistant in England when the "Crimean war" broke out and made huge sums of money through having discovered the secret of how to dye the scarlet cloth then used for uniform in the British army. Humphreys bought the Castle and estate at Ballyhaise from the Newburys who were in financial difficulties. The Newburys sold to the Humphreys only as much as was necessary to pay their debts so there are parts of the locality which never passed from the Newburys.(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
