- About twenty five years ago there was a football match in Hugh Reilly's meadow Knockatee. The competing teams were Castletara and Cavan Slashers. Castletara won, the score being two goals nine points for Castletara and only four points for the Cavan Slashers. There were thirteen players on each side. Some evening all the young men of a district gathered together and kicked football in some nearby field. One man who knew the rules of football well, watched, and at the end of an hour he picked the best men. They played in their shirt and trousers. It was a pair of heavy boots or clogs that they wore. I never heard any account of cross-country football. The referee used what is called a "Tory Whistle".(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
