   pupils paid her a few pence a week.
   She was born and reared in Ballymorris, and took up the job of teaching about the age of 25.

   The subjects taught were Arithmetic, very little Irish, and writing which was done on slates with pencils. The teacher, Mary O'Brien, lived in Ballymorris, until the time of her death.

   Up to 1850 there was a hedge school at the cross of Ballymorris. The master's name was James Brien a native of Ballymorris, Bree, Co. Wexford. The school he taught in was his own house which is now levelled out into the field. The field where it stood is now the
