  1. Articles of furniture now no longer made, but of which many specimens are still to be found in houses in this district are:
    Settlebeds, Clothes Chests, Creepy Stools Press beds, Running Stools.
    Settlebeds usually occupied a position in the kitchen by a wall. They were made of any ordinary wood by the local carpenter, and were useful where families were big and sleeping accommodation scarce. A settlebed was about six feet long. It consisted of (a) the back, about four feet high and six feet long. It was made from boards nailed to a frame. (b) At each end was a panel reaching about half way up, and at right angles to the back. This panel was about two feet wide, and corresponded to the head and foot of the bed. (c) The bottom of the bed consisted of flat boards, stretching lenghtwise, at right angles to the back. The bottom was about four feet wide. It was divided into two parts. The part nearest the back door was fixed, while the other half was hinged to it. At night, this bottom was let down to its full width, and the tick, bed clothes etc, were arranged on it.
