Irish was spoken in this district up to about 120 years ago.Mrs Michael Gowran, Knockaville, remembers her grand-father saying the Rosary in Irish and Mrs Mary Glynn said her grand-father Christy Connor never spoke of word word of English until he was about twelve years of age. Mrs Glynn (Loughatrim, Parish of Kinnegad, Co Westmeath) used numerous Irish words in speaking English - words which she said her mother always used e.g. Práiscín is always used for a canvas apronDrumán for traces used for ploughing or harrowingBoithrín for a small road.Póiríní = for small potatoesPrúg for a small houseGríoscín for fresh pieces of pork
